A tech media outlet recently confirmed that OpenAI is testing a new feature called the ‘Connector Settings,’ and ChatGPT will soon support the Model Context Protocol or MCP, thereby enabling the chatbot to seamlessly integrate with third-party AI services. The introduction of the MCP protocol began in November, 2024 and was developed by the AI company, Anthropic. It serves several uses, including to standardize the interaction between large language models (LLM) and external systems.
The MCP can also be thought of as an “USB-C interface" for AI applications, allowing AI assistants to access various data through controlled interfaces. This means users can easily list tables, read data, or perform SQL queries, thereby enhancing efficiency in tasks such as database exploration and analysis.

Ordinary consumers may not immediately feel the impact of the MCP protocol, but the technology is expected to bring significant changes to businesses. Through MCP, companies can connect their internal tools with ChatGPT to achieve on-demand data sharing and optimize workflows. A user named Tibor on social platform X reported that in the current test version, users can add new tools by clicking the "Customize" option and fill in information such as tool name, URL, and description. It is worth noting that although this feature is currently still in the internal testing stage, OpenAI expects it to be officially launched in the next few days or weeks.
