Spotify Will Label AI Persona Artists and Remove Them From Recommendations
Spotify is introducing an AI Persona badge for artist profiles that may not represent real humans, excluding their music from personalized recommendations by default, as part of a broader industry-wide push for transparency in the age of generative AI.
Spotify is drawing a clear line in the sand between human musicians and their AI-generated counterparts. The streaming giant announced on August 11, 2026, that it will begin labeling artist profiles whose public identities may have been generated by artificial intelligence with a new AI Persona badge.
Starting in mid-September, the badge will appear on artist profiles, in search results, and alongside tracks in playlists. More significantly, music from these labeled profiles will be excluded from personalized recommendations by default—a move designed to protect the discoverability of human artists and rebuild listener trust in an era flooded with synthetic content. As AP News reported, the change reflects growing pressure on platforms to distinguish between human creativity and AI-generated output.
The badge specifically addresses whether an artist's public identity represents a real person, not whether AI was used to produce the music itself. Spotify is not relying solely on voluntary disclosures.
Starting August 11, artists can self-disclose their AI Persona status through Spotify for Artists. But the platform will also deploy human reviewers and AI investigative tools to flag profiles that appear to present photorealistic AI-generated identities, beginning with those that have reached defined audience thresholds.
Artists who are labeled by Spotify will be notified and given the opportunity to appeal. Users will also be able to report suspected AI Persona profiles in the coming months. The badge itself will display whether the artist self-disclosed or was flagged by Spotify's review team.
The recorded music industry has been calling for stronger guardrails around AI, with the RIAA, IFPI, and a coalition of major and independent labels proposing new tagging systems and chart eligibility rules for AI-generated music just last month.
Billboard notes that this move could reshape how AI-generated music is discovered and monetized. Spotify's AI Persona label is the latest—and most visible—response to listener frustration.
As the company itself put it: "True artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity". The new policy follows Spotify's earlier introduction of AI Credits, Artist Profile Protection, and a verification badge for human artists.
For listeners, the change means your algorithmic recommendations will no longer be cluttered with AI-generated personas unless you actively choose to follow them. For AI artists, it means visibility will depend entirely on direct fan engagement rather than algorithmic serendipity.
