Alibaba Cloud, Cambricon, and Ant Group join PyTorch Foundation governance
The PyTorch Foundation has added Alibaba Cloud and Cambricon as Platinum members with governing board seats, while Ant Group joins as a Gold member, announced September 8 at PyTorch Conference China 2026 in Shanghai alongside longtime member Huawei.
China's largest AI infrastructure players just bought themselves a seat at the table where PyTorch's future gets decided. The PyTorch Foundation announced on September 8 that Alibaba Cloud and AI chipmaker Cambricon have joined as Platinum members, while Ant Group signed on at the Gold tier — all revealed at PyTorch Conference China 2026 in Shanghai, alongside longtime member Huawei.
The membership tier isn't just a badge; it comes with real influence over where an increasingly critical piece of AI infrastructure heads next. A few details define what each company actually gets:
- As Platinum members, Alibaba Cloud and Cambricon each receive one seat on the PyTorch Foundation's Governing Board and one on its Technical Advisory Council
- Ant Group's Gold membership carries no specified equivalent governance seat, according to the announcement
- More than 250 organizations across China already contribute to PyTorch Foundation projects, including DeepSpeed, Ray, Safetensors, and vLLM
The timing says as much as the announcement itself. Cambricon's Elton Gong framed the move around wanting PyTorch to work "out-of-the-box" across a wider range of hardware backends, a priority that matters enormously for a chipmaker trying to compete with Nvidia domestically.
According to Futurum Group's analysis of the announcement, the additions deepen the foundation's footprint in what it calls the world's second-largest AI market, positioning PyTorch — and by extension the open-source AI stack it anchors — as a shared foundation that both American and Chinese infrastructure giants now have a formal hand in steering.
