Anthropic CEO: AI Will Automate 90% of Coding in 3-6 Months

According to Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, AI will handle 90% of programming tasks within the next 3 to 6 months. He stated this at a forum with the U.S. Foreign Relations Committee, predicting that AI could potentially write almost all code within 12 months. His statements have garnered significant attention from experts and AI enthusiasts around the world.

Mike Froman, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, asked Amodei about his vision for AI's best-case scenario. Amodei responded that programming is one of the fastest-advancing areas for AI, so he expects AI to handle the majority of programming tasks in the near future. While acknowledging this might sound concerning, he emphasized that programmers will still be crucial for defining desired functionality, application design, and decision-making.
Furthermore, Amodei suggested that while human programmers will remain necessary, AI will gradually take on many human tasks. He encouraged a reevaluation of the concepts of "useful" and "useless," arguing that human life will remain meaningful, with AI adding new possibilities.
Planning for the Future
Froman also asked Amodei if "DeepSeek" could be considered a "Sputnik moment." Amodei responded by downplaying DeepSeek's relevance, characterizing it as simply another example of decreasing data costs. He stressed that a future where everyone can program is rapidly approaching.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, also shared his perspective on the future of programming in a podcast. He believes programming methods will significantly change within the next five to ten years, with many already using natural language for programming, gradually phasing out traditional coding methods. He jokingly remarked that few people currently program by writing code, implying that the definition of programming and required skills will drastically change.
