LG's Exaone AI has features that give DeepSeek a run for its money, sporting cost-effective capabilities.
The race is heating up to release top-notch AI models that attract little to no cost to run. Recently, the leading American research institution Epoch AI released a report officially recognizing LG's Exaone3.532B model, tagging it as one of the "Noteworthy AIs" around. The most significant quality of this model is that it excels in cost efficiency, comparable to China's DeepSeek.
The LG Exaone3.5 model was officially launched in December 2023, recording a development investment of approximately 7 billion Korean won or 4.8 million USD. That figure is significantly lower than the 6 million USD DeepSeek used to develop its V3 model. Epoch AI's evaluation was based on several prominent factors, such as model performance and usage frequency. Further, this is the first Korean AI model to garner such recognition in two years, highlighting LG's exceptional progress in artificial intelligence.
Head of LG AI Research, Paek Kyung-hoon, stated at a conference by the Ministry of Science and Technology that multiple optimizations were conducted on the Exaone to enhance its efficiency in practical industrial applications. The initial Exaone1.0 model was launched at the end of 2021 and featured 300 billion parameters. But this latest 3.5 version has reduced this to 32 billion parameters. This reduction improves the model's efficiency, significantly lowering its operational costs.
The Exaone model is currently used in LG Group's generative AI service ChatExaone, helping employees boost work efficiency. In addition, Epoch AI's report mentioned several other Korean companies and universities with noteworthy AI models, including Naver, Samsung Electronics, Seoul National University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Yonsei University, and Korea University. All these names have made it to the list of notable AI models, showcasing South Korea's growing strength in the global AI technology competition.
With competition rife for top spots in AI, LG's achievement represents a strong boost to South Korea's tech industry. If the company continues advancing, it will eventually lead the trends in the AI field.
