What Google Gemini Can Now Do for You by Making Phone Calls to Businesses
Google is testing "Call for Me," a Gemini feature that dials businesses directly, navigates phone menus, waits on hold and handles tasks like reservations and appointment changes, launching first to Pixel 11 owners with a paid Gemini subscription enrolled in the Phone by Google beta.
Google just gave Gemini a phone number and something to say when it dials. According to TechCrunch's September 24 report, the company is testing Call for Me, a feature that lets Gemini place real calls to businesses on a user's behalf, introduce itself, and carry the conversation through to completion rather than just gathering information.
The feature builds on years of incremental Pixel calling tools, but this version goes noticeably further than its predecessors. Once a user asks Gemini to handle a call, the AI dials from the person's own number and takes it from there. A few details define how it actually works:
- Gemini can navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold, and speak directly with whoever answers, handling tasks like checking product availability or rescheduling reservations
- A live transcript runs throughout the call, letting the user follow along and take over at any moment if Gemini hits a question it can't handle
- Google has built in hard limits: Call for Me cannot dial 911, complete financial transactions, or make telemarketing calls
Access is deliberately narrow for now — limited to Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold owners in the US who pay for Gemini and are enrolled in the Phone by Google Public Beta. Google framed the caution directly: "real conversations involve accents, unexpected policy questions, ambiguous requests, and variable audio quality," and the company says it wants to get the experience right before expanding it.
The launch also lands as rival agents like Meta's Muse and Instinct push into similar territory, making the real contest less about which AI can place a phone call and more about which one can hold up its end of an actual conversation with a stranger on the other end of the line.
