UN AI for Good Global Commission Aims to Bridge Global AI Governance Gaps

The United Nations has launched a major new initiative to bring coherence to the fragmented global AI governance landscape.

 Working with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN has established the AI for Good Global Commission, a high-level body that will convene heads of state, policymakers, and executives from leading AI companies to coordinate international approaches to AI governance and responsible development.

The commission builds on the AI for Good platform, which has been the UN's leading action-oriented platform on AI since 2017, and will operate alongside the newly established Global Dialogue on AI Governance, which was created by the UN General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/79/325 .

The commission represents a significant step in the UN's broader effort to establish a global AI governance framework.

As highlighted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the initiative rests on three fundamental pillars: policy (through the Global Dialogue and the commission), science (through the newly established International Independent Scientific Panel on AI), and capacity (through proposals for a Global Fund for AI Capacity Development) .

The AI for Good Global Commission will serve as the high-level convening mechanism to translate these pillars into concrete action.

The commission's first meeting is scheduled to take place in Geneva, back-to-back with the inaugural Global Dialogue on AI Governance, which will be held on July 6-7, 2026 . The Global Dialogue itself is the culmination of a year-long process following the adoption of the Global Digital Compact in September 2024, which committed UN Member States to inclusive, cooperative approaches to AI governance .

The Dialogue will bring together all 193 UN Member States alongside private sector, civil society, academia, and the technical community for the first universal conversation on AI governance, structured around thematic clusters including AI opportunities and implications, bridging AI divides, safe and trustworthy AI, and human rights protections .

The AI for Good Global Commission will be supported by a dedicated website that will serve as the official source for membership, outputs, and activities . The initiative reflects a growing recognition among world leaders that no single country can address the opportunities and challenges of AI alone.

 As the UN Secretary-General emphasized, international cooperation on AI governance is essential to ensure that AI development benefits everyone — not just the most technologically advanced nations .
