Airbnbs New AI Search Does Not Yet Include Sponsored Listings
Airbnb has rolled out AI-powered search alongside new host pricing tools, social features and guest services, personalizing results using guest history and behavior, though CEO Brian Chesky says sponsored listings remain a future consideration rather than a feature live at launch.
Airbnb just shipped the most visible AI feature in its history, built on something the company has been quietly testing for months. On October 1, Airbnb unveiled a suite of platform upgrades, with AI-powered search as the centerpiece, alongside new host pricing tools and expanded guest services like personal chefs and photography.
The search system works as a toggle sitting alongside Airbnb's classic search rather than replacing it, and it leans heavily on a guest's own activity to shape what they see. A few details define how the personalization actually works:
- The model draws on a guest's entire booking history plus a short-term signal — up to 200 listings viewed in the past 21 days — to rank results
- Rather than a chatbot interface, results still appear as normal photo listings with short AI-generated descriptions, a deliberate choice Chesky has said reflects how visual Airbnb's booking decisions are
- The same underlying ranking system is also being used in Airbnb's promotional emails to decide which listings get surfaced to which guests
Sponsored listings, despite being widely anticipated, are notably not part of this launch. Chesky addressed the question directly back in February, telling analysts, "we are gonna be experimenting with making AI search more conversational... and eventually, we will be looking at sponsor listings as a result of that," while stressing the company wants the design right first.
The approach also marks a deliberate contrast with rivals: Booking.com and Expedia both launched inside ChatGPT last October, letting people search their inventory from within someone else's assistant, while Airbnb is keeping AI search inside its own app — a decision that gives it full control over ranking and design, but also means its AI experience competes purely on its own merits rather than riding distribution from a bigger chatbot platform.
