Huawei Is Rushing Its Next AI Chip to Beat Nvidia by Nine Months

Huawei just moved its own goalposts closer, and by a lot. At its Huawei Connect conference in Shanghai on Thursday, the company announced it's pulling forward the launch of its next-generation Ascend 960DT chip to the first quarter of 2027 — nine months earlier than the Q4 2027 target it had set previously. Rotating chairman David Wang told the crowd the chip's "performance doubling as planned" is what made the accelerated timeline possible.

The real story, though, isn't the chip alone — it's the system Huawei is building around it. The company unveiled its Peerium Computing Architecture, built on Huawei's proprietary UnifiedBus interconnect, aimed at linking chips into single, massive computing clusters rather than competing purely on individual chip specs. A few details define the rollout:

• The follow-up Ascend 960PR chip arrives in Q3 2027, also a quarter ahead of schedule, with the Ascend 970 and 980 planned for 2028 and 2029
• Huawei's Atlas 950 SuperCluster can reportedly connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards into one system
• Chairman Eric Xu said Huawei's domestic chip production "falls significantly short of domestic market requirements," effectively ruling out any near-term push into international sales

Analysts are treating the announcement with some caution. China tech watcher Rui Ma noted on X that the newly announced SuperPoD cluster size — 4,096 chips — is actually far smaller than the 15,488-chip system Huawei previously described, meaning the chip itself arrived early but the surrounding system shrank.

The Council on Foreign Relations has separately estimated Nvidia's top chips remain many times more powerful on a per-chip basis through 2027. The timing carries its own weight too: the announcement lands just a week before Presidents Trump and Xi are scheduled to meet in Washington, with Huawei making clear that whatever ground it gains, it's racing to win China's domestic market first, not the global one.
