America's air traffic system is still running on infrastructure dating back to the 1960s, and the FAA just placed its biggest bet yet on software to fix it. The agency awarded Boston-based Air Space Intelligence a 12-year, $875 million contract to deploy AI platforms across the National Airspace System, aimed at predicting and easing the congestion that produces billions of dollars in delays every year.

The contract covers two systems working at different points in a flight's timeline. FMDS (Flow Management Data and Services) becomes the technological backbone of the FAA's Air Traffic Control System Command Center, while SMART (Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories) analyzes conditions before a plane ever leaves the gate. A few details show how the system is meant to work:

  • SMART uses predictive machine-learning models to flag traffic imbalances days or weeks in advance, recommending route adjustments before departure
  • ASI's underlying Flyways AI platform already supports Alaska Airlines dispatchers and has delivered a 3-5% reduction in fuel burn on long-haul flights
  • Initial deployment of SMART is targeted for fall 2026, with the same technology already used by Delta, United, the U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford framed the shift plainly: the tools will help the agency "anticipate demand, balance capacity, and manage traffic before delays occur" rather than reacting once they've already happened.

The award lands against a backdrop of mounting pressure — a 2024 GAO report warned repeatedly that aging FAA systems posed rising operational risk, and this year's government shutdown forced the agency to cut flights at 40 major airports over controller staffing shortages.

Whether $875 million in predictive software can meaningfully offset decades of underinvestment in the system's hardware and staffing is the real question the rollout will have to answer once SMART goes live this fall.
