Positron AI Chip Startup Hits $5 Billion Valuation With $875M Series C

Positron just landed one of the largest inference-chip bets of the year on a product that hasn't taped out yet. The Reno-based startup raised $875 million in a two-tranche Series C, closing at a $5 billion post-money valuation — a fivefold jump from the roughly $1 billion mark it hit at its Series B just seven months earlier.

The round's structure and its backers say a lot about who's betting on the memory-first approach. NEA, Atreides Management and Valor Equity Partners co-led the first tranche, while Netscape and Silicon Graphics co-founder Jim Clark anchored the second. Key details behind the raise:

  • The financing splits into a $375 million Series C at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation, plus up to $500 million more in a Series C-1
  • Positron's upcoming Asimov chip pairs its compute architecture with 288GB to 2,304GB of commodity LPDDR5X memory per chip, sidestepping the supply-constrained HBM market entirely
  • Asimov tapes out on TSMC's N3P process by the end of 2026, with production targeted for the second half of 2027

CEO Mitesh Agrawal said deploying the company's current Atlas system — already running across more than 50 racks at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure — directly shaped Asimov's design.

The funding will also build a Titan system combining four to eight Asimov chips, aimed at models beyond 16 trillion parameters and context windows past 10 million tokens.

What makes the valuation notable is what it isn't backed by yet: Positron is competing against Groq, Cerebras and Etched on the shared bet that Nvidia's GPU architecture leaves real efficiency gains on the table for inference-specific hardware, and investors are paying $5 billion to find out whether Positron's memory-heavy wager proves that thesis before a single Asimov chip ships.
