OpenAI and Elastic Are Joining Forces to Bring Frontier AI Into Enterprise Data
OpenAI and Elastic have announced a collaboration aimed at combining OpenAI's advanced reasoning capabilities with Elastic’s enterprise search and unstructured-data infrastructure. The partnership targets businesses looking to use AI over large volumes of organisational information while maintaining governance and enterprise controls.
OpenAI and Elastic have significantly expanded their strategic collaboration, announcing a deeper integration designed to help organizations build production-ready AI applications and agents using OpenAI models with Elasticsearch.
The partnership, announced on July 30, 2026, directly addresses a critical bottleneck in enterprise AI adoption: the challenge of grounding powerful frontier models in the vast, messy, and permission-governed world of unstructured corporate data.
According to Gartner, unstructured data—including documents, tickets, logs, metrics, traces, and security alerts—accounts for 70% to 90% of organizational data. Without access to this governed context, even the most advanced AI models struggle to deliver accurate and reliable results. T
he OpenAI-Elastic integration tackles this by combining OpenAI's reasoning capabilities with Elasticsearch's retrieval, search, and governance layer, which includes lexical and vector search, semantic reranking, and granular access controls in a single platform. This allows AI agents to find relevant, real-time context with the correct permissions, reducing unnecessary data sent to the model and improving retrieval quality while lowering token costs.
"The success of enterprise AI depends on connecting powerful models with the knowledge businesses already possess. Much of that knowledge is buried in unstructured data." – Greg Tademoto, Global VP, Business Development & Strategic AI Partnerships at Elastic
Three Pillars of Enterprise AI Transformation
The expanded collaboration will focus on delivering three key customer outcomes:
- Context-aware AI agents – Building agents that can retrieve accurate, permission-aware enterprise knowledge at scale while improving efficiency. Elastic's internal tests have shown that better retrieval can reduce input-token use by up to 75% compared to standard RAG baselines.
- Agentic observability – Correlating telemetry data to accelerate root cause investigation for site reliability engineering (SRE) teams, helping them quickly resolve complex operational issues.
- Agentic security operations – Converting high volumes of security alerts into evidence-backed investigations for analyst review and action. Through the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, Elastic plans to integrate OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Cyber-specific models into its security workflows.
For businesses, this partnership signals a move beyond AI experimentation toward production-grade systems that can securely leverage internal data. As Colleen Kapase, Vice President of Strategic Global Partnerships at OpenAI, noted: "Great AI needs great context".
The collaboration, which builds on Elastic's support for OpenAI models since 2023, also plans to extend governance to the OpenAI platform to detect anomalous activity alongside existing security tools.
This integration could be the key to unlocking the full potential of enterprise AI by ensuring that powerful models are not just intelligent, but also reliable and secure within the unique context of each organization.
