Report Shows that ChatGPT Mobile Users are 85% Male
Up to 85% of ChatGPT mobile users are male, the report says.

People are ready to spend on AI, provided it gives them results. According to reports from Appfigures, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, leads the overall spending on AI apps, which jumped to $1.42 billion in 2024. This marks a 274% increase from 2023, making ChatGPT so dominant that it has consistently earned more than the aggregate revenue of other top AI assistant apps.
Apple and Google have also benefited from the rise in profits and revenue, with the mobile AI apps constituting a $2 billion market, according to Appfigures. In the space of a year plus, ChatGPT has been downloaded 353 million times to date. However, the demographics aren't quite what it seems.
Breaking things down, more than half of ChatGPT’s mobile users are under the age of 25, indicating that young people are more open to experimenting with new technology. This includes those who may simply want a tool to execute their homework, as the number of teens that have ChatGPT for schoolwork has since doubled from 2023.
The second largest demographic is users between ages 50 and 64 representing 20.2% of users. However, the major point is the gender gap among ChatGPT users, as Appfigures estimates that across age groups, men make up 84.5% of all users.
While women hold some leading roles in the AI industry, reports show they're generally more skeptical about AI than men. For example, an Axios poll found that 53% of women surveyed would never allow their children to use AI, as opposed to 26% of men.
Further, AI is likely to bring about job losses, and the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that women will be more likely to lose their jobs to automation than their male counterparts. There's also the question of sexually explicit deepfake images women feel vulnerable to.
ChatGPT may be leading in AI app spending, but with DeepSeek and other competitors dreaming big in the market, especially as free and peon spruce, the OpenAI app may see slight headwinds. DeepSeek currently leads OpenAI as the top app in the App Store. Demographics takes the bench while these huge AI apps slug it out in the market.
