Google.org invests N3 billion to enhance AI skills and digital safety in Nigeria
Google.org commits around N3 billion ($2.1 million) to Nigerian organizations to boost AI skills, digital safety, and innovation, advancing capacity building in Africa's AI ecosystem.
Google.org has announced a substantial grant of approximately N3 billion (about $2.1 million) aimed at accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) skills development and promoting digital safety within Nigeria. This financial support is directed through Nigerian organizations and aligns with broader efforts to build sustainable AI capacity across Africa.
The grant supports various initiatives, including large-scale training programs targeted at youth, educators, and policymakers to equip them with AI expertise crucial for Nigeria’s evolving digital economy. Notably, a flagship training program will enable 20,000 young Nigerians to gain skills in data science and AI, while another initiative will train 25,000 educators who will, in turn, teach AI concepts to over 125,000 students. Additionally, policymakers benefit from upskilling programs focused on AI governance and responsible usage, ensuring that Nigeria's AI development proceeds with ethical and regulatory foresight.
In addition to capacity building, the grant facilitates an AI Fund that empowers Nigerian startups by providing financing, Google Cloud credits, mentorship, and access to cutting-edge AI tools and a global network. Selected startups tackling critical problems in sectors like healthcare, energy, and security will receive up to N100 million each plus up to $3.5 million in cloud credits, enabling them to scale innovative AI solutions effectively.
This significant investment from Google.org underlines a broader $5.8 million commitment to digital skills programs across Sub-Saharan Africa and supports Nigeria’s national AI strategy launched earlier in 2024. The strategy seeks to harness the potential of AI for economic growth, improved governance, and enhanced citizen welfare. Google’s partnership with the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy exemplifies a collaborative approach to nurturing Africa’s AI ecosystem, positioning Nigeria as a continent-wide leader in AI innovation.
