Scarlett Johansson Sounds Alarm on AI Misuse After Deepfake Video Targets Kanye West

Scarlett Johansson is calling for urgent regulation of AI technology after a deepfake video surfaced, falsely depicting her and other Jewish celebrities protesting against Kanye West's antisemitic remarks. The AI-generated video shows versions of Johansson, alongside other prominent figures like Steven Spielberg, Jerry Seinfeld, and Adam Sandler, wearing t-shirts with the Star of David and a hand giving the middle finger, with the word "Kanye" underneath.

In a statement to People magazine, Johansson expressed her concerns about the potential dangers of AI, stating, "We must call out the misuse of AI, no matter its messaging, or we risk losing a hold on reality". She emphasized her zero tolerance for antisemitism and hate speech, but believes AI's amplification of hate speech is a greater threat.

The deepfake video was created by Ori Bejerano and Guy Bar, digital marketers for the Israel-based agency Gitam BBDO. It adds to the growing concerns about AI's impact, especially after West marketed swastika-themed shirts on his website, advertised during a Super Bowl commercial.

Johansson is not new to AI misuse; she previously dealt with unauthorized use of her likeness and voice in AI-driven apps and chatbots. She joins other celebrities like Taylor Swift and Tom Hanks, who have also been victims of AI-generated deepfakes.

The actress is urging US legislators to prioritize AI regulation, highlighting the need to protect citizens from the imminent dangers of AI. She stresses that this issue affects the immediate future of humanity and requires bipartisan action.
