Perplexity Launches New Android Mobile Tool for Writing Emails and Booking Dinners
Newly launched Perplexity android mobile assistant helps write emails, create reminders, and book dinners
Perplexity keeps coming up with positives and now, it has announced an upgrade of its AI "answer engine" to a mobile assistant on Android. This new assistant can provide answers to general questions from users, and perform various tasks on their behalf, such as writing emails and setting reminders.
In addition, the assistant features multimodal capabilities, allowing users to inquire about content displayed on the screen. Users can also use the camera to let the assistant "see" objects in front of them.
Several users have tested the interesting upgrade. One asked the assistant to "call a car," and the assistant automatically opened the Uber app to display available ride options. This help the the user quickly find their destination.
Another user reported the upgrade as being impressive with results when he asked it the assistant to "play a nice podcast." It duly delivered by opening YouTube and playing the latest episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience."
As for Android mobile cameras, a reporter observed how Perplexity's assistant successfully recognized a promotional Pokémon card that the reporter received in a McDonald's Happy Meal. The promotion was only just starting! Also, the assistant helps the reporter compose and send a text message to his family.
Some alternatives can compete with Perplexity's assistant, such as the Gemini from Google, which can now complete tasks across multiple applications and handle multimodal requests. It's worth nothing that Perplexity's assistant currently does not support all applications and features, such as accessing Slack or Reddit.
However, the assistant supports multiple applications like Spotify, YouTube, and Uber. Users can also expect email, messaging, and clock functions. A Perplexity spokesperson stated that they will continue to add support for more applications and features.
To enable the assistant, users can head to the Perplexity app. It then prompts them to replace their phone's default assistant with the Perplexity assistant. After that, users can access and use the assistant by swiping up or long-pressing the home button located in the bottom left corner of their screen.
"iPhone users can't access these features but if Apple can grant the necessary permissions, we will implement this feature," stated a representative of Perplexity.
