Rockefeller Foundation Launches AI Readiness Project to Promote Responsible AI Use
The Rockefeller Foundation unveils the AI Readiness Project, a national initiative to help U.S. states, territories, and Tribal Nations build capacity for responsible AI use in public service, fostering collaboration, trust, and ethical AI deployment.
The Rockefeller Foundation, in partnership with the Center for Civic Futures (CCF), has announced the launch of the AI Readiness Project, a pioneering national effort designed to help governments across all 50 U.S. states, territories, and Tribal Nations enhance their capacity to use artificial intelligence responsibly in public service. As AI technologies reshape how governments deliver services, manage data, and engage with citizens, the project addresses the critical need for building confidence, shared infrastructure, and knowledge among public officials tasked with integrating AI into government systems.
This initiative builds on the existing State Chief AI Officer Community of Practice, expanding this trusted, nonpartisan network where government leaders collaborate, share lessons, and co-develop tools to guide AI with public trust and transparency at its core. The AI Readiness Project includes the creation of the first-ever Government AI Knowledge Hub, expanded convenings, and pilot programs offering low-risk environments for jurisdictions to test AI approaches safely.
Cass Madison, Executive Director of Center for Civic Futures, emphasized the urgency in government preparedness: "AI is moving faster than any previous wave of innovation, and governments are being asked to make consequential decisions that will affect people's lives for generations. Our goal isn’t just to keep up with AI. It’s to make sure it helps government work better for people."
With many public agencies experiencing a wide range of AI maturity and risk tolerance, the project aims to professionalize AI governance across government sectors. It supports leaders in navigating the balance between innovation and ethical responsibility while addressing challenges such as data privacy, fairness, transparency, and citizen engagement.
The Rockefeller Foundation’s commitment to responsible AI reflects a broader recognition of the need for inclusive, equitable, and trustworthy AI systems in the public sector. By empowering government officials with resources, peer support, and practical pilot opportunities, the AI Readiness Project aspires to ensure AI technologies improve government services while preserving democratic values and building lasting public trust.
