Beware Gmail Users! Up to 250 Million Accounts Face Serious Threats from AI Hackers
Gmail users must brace up to avoid serious threats on their accounts from AI hackers.

You read right! 250 million Gmail accounts face threats from hackers backed by artificial intelligence. The cybersecurity crisis is unprecedented and according to reports, the attacks are considered the most sophisticated phishing attacks to date. Even some of the most well-known security were almost caught off guard.
Warped AI
With the potential AI packs, one would think that it would be used for good. However, the attackers are using artificial intelligence technology to impersonate Google customer service by issuing fake urgent warnings to users claiming that there's a security breach with their accounts. As a result, many uses get lured into providing personal information, which could leave them at a disadvantage.
Sounds too good to be true? Well, one victim named Zach Latta shared his experience: he received a call from "Google Support," and the call quality was very clear. The Caller spoke with a fluent American accent, informing him that his account had been temporarily locked. Zach was even more surprised after the call ended because he received an email from a legitimate Google domain, which further enhanced the credibility of this scam.
All too Genuine
In this case, Zach was lucky because he ultimately realized it was an attack orchestrated using AI. However, others were not so lucky. Besides, the complexity of the incident has raised alarms among cybersecurity experts. Cybercriminals are always updated. They continuously upgrade their tactics to bypass existing security measures.
According to Spencer Starkey, the Vice President of SonicWall, the rapid evolution of such attacks makes them increasingly difficult to detect and prevent, and users must remain highly vigilant. Gmail users can protect themselves from such AI-driven cyber attacks by staying calm and hanging up immediately if they receive a call claiming to be from Google Support. Experts also recommend using Google’s search engine and their own Gmail account to verify the caller's identity and check for any unusual activity in their accounts.
Staying Safe is Key
Google has also rolled out some innovative steps to help users stay protected. The emailing giant launched a service called the "Advanced Protection Program," specifically designed for high-risk users, such as journalists, activists, and political figures. After enrolling, users will require hardware security keys or biometric technology to log into their accounts, moving from standard online verifications. This will ensure that even if hackers obtain the username and password, they cannot access the account without the physical (hardware) devices.
