Ameca, a humanoid robot developed by the UK-based Engineered Arts, has been making waves with its incredibly lifelike expressions and gestures. The robot recently engaged with the public for the first time at the Cornwall Festival of Tech, leaving many "gobsmacked" by its range of expressions, while others found it "disconcerting".

Will Jackson, CEO of Engineered Arts, emphasized that Ameca's facial movements and gestures set it apart, focusing on enhancing the robot's communication capabilities to advance artificial intelligence. He noted the importance of replicating human facial expressions for effective information conveyance, stating, "Every slight nod, eye contact, or raised eyebrow can communicate a wealth of meaning".
Ameca is also the first of its kind to arrive at the National Robotarium in Edinburgh. Researchers there will use Ameca to study public perceptions and attitudes towards humanoid robots, gathering valuable insights to inform the development of future technologies. The robot's capabilities include embedded microphones, cameras, facial recognition software, and articulated motorized components, enabling natural and engaging interactions with people.
The National Robotarium plans to showcase Ameca at various events, school visits, and workshops across Scotland to demystify robotics and foster trust in human-robot interaction.
