Students Relying on AI Tools? Teachers Say 'Not So Fast!' with Big Fat Zeros
The rampant use of AI tools to generate essays among university students has led professors to respond with negative grades.

The rise of artificial intelligence has seen many positives but recently, some students seem to have taken things too far. A news article reported that AI tools have become a "magic weapon" for college students who use them to complete reports and papers. However, this phenomenon has also raised concerns about ethics and academic misconduct.
The Findings
Some University teachers and experts have noted that several students depend on AI to fabricate research data, edit experimental images, and more. This has seriously affected their academic integrity. Accordingly, one university's homework group shows that teachers explicitly stipulate that essays directly generated by AI will be graded zero.
A survey by the Changjiang Daily revealed that nearly 60% of university teachers and students frequently use generative AI, with nearly 30% of college students mainly using it to write papers or assignments. Ding Junpeng, a research assistant at the Ministry of Education's Information Network Engineering Research Center, pointed out that the worst case is students using AI to automatically generate papers. Furthermore, the fabrication or editing of images is increasing, and AI technology has significantly reduced the cost of fabrication.
Hardline Response
Many universities have had to respond to this phenomenon by introducing usage guidelines for AI tools, and several research teams in China are actively conducting research on AI paper anti-recognition detection. Experts further warn that information provided by AI tools may have flaws centered on authenticity and accuracy, and such tools may even produce absurdly wrong answers.
This phenomenon showcases the double-edged sword effect of AI technology in education and across different applications. While AI tools improve learning efficiency; they also pose challenges to academic integrity. Universities and educational institutions need to strengthen supervision and guide students to use AI tools correctly, helping them maintain academic integrity in the process.
