UAE Commits $1 Billion to Expand AI Infrastructure and Services Across Africa
The United Arab Emirates announces a $1 billion AI for Development initiative to boost AI infrastructure and services across Africa, supporting education, healthcare, and climate resilience for sustainable growth.
The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a $1 billion investment plan aimed at expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure and AI-powered services throughout Africa. Announced at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg by UAE Minister of State Saeed Bin Mubarak Al Hajeri, this "AI for Development Initiative" targets accelerating technological growth and AI adoption to help African nations meet their development priorities.
The initiative focuses on integrating AI into critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, digital identity, and climate adaptation. It seeks to improve digital infrastructure and government services, thereby enhancing productivity and sustainable social-economic growth across the continent. As African countries increasingly embrace AI, the UAE aims to ensure no nation is left behind in the global AI transformation.
The UAE, already among Africa’s largest investors with over $118 billion in investments since 2020, plans to provide not only funding but also access to advanced AI computing power, technical expertise, and global partnerships. This comprehensive approach underlines the UAE's commitment to responsible and inclusive AI development benefiting governments, businesses, and communities across Africa.
Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, emphasized the UAE's vision to leverage AI to drive innovation and sustainable development, reflecting the country's broader mission to become a global hub for AI technologies. The initiative also aligns with the UAE’s strategic efforts to strengthen ties with African nations through technology-led partnerships.
This bold move highlights the UAE’s role as a key player in accelerating Africa's digital transformation and reinforces its geopolitical and economic presence on the continent by positioning AI as a cornerstone for future growth.
